Mazagran

Mazagran is usually reserved for hot summer days. Although iced coffee is now a popular beverage, a slightly different – improved – version was popular in Vilnius during the interwar period.

Traditionally, this drink was made from strong, very sweet coffee with a splash of cognac. The drink came to Vilnius from far-away Algeria, and is believed to be the original iced coffee. French soldiers drank it when they were fighting in Algeria in the 19th century and brought the drink back with them to Europe, where it quickly became popular.

You will need:

  • 1 cup of sweetened black coffee
  • 2-3 ice cubes
  • 1 shot (20 ml) cognac

Method:

Put the ice cubes in the coffee and add a shot of cognac.
