Exhibition: Are You a Kanuk?

This exhibition is part of Vilnius Poker, a cinematographic project by director Donatas Ulvydas. Ulvydas is presenting the themes and characters in Ričardas Gavelis’s novel to the people of Vilnius in multiple stages, holding jazz concerts and an exhibition of works of art inspired by it before the movie is even made.

From the moment it was published, Gavelis’s Vilnius Poker did not leave anyone indifferent. At the time, the author himself wrote: “Some people thought this novel was a study of universal slavery and universal surveillance. Others attentively read the overtly erotic pages with delight or disgust.”

According to critics, with this novel, the city and the body entered Lithuanian literature, from the depiction of the countryside to urban culture, and eroticism and openness appeared.

Among the many different settings of the novel, readers also find themselves in the studio of Teodoras, an artist. Donatas Ulvydas, who will be directing the film adaptation of Gavelis’s novel, put a lot of thought into what pieces should be hanging in the studio during the making of the movie. “Definitely authentic! Real works of art,” he decided.

He invited painter and exhibition curator Linas Liandzbergis to select the pieces. Since the
collection turned out to be substantial, the two decided not to limit themselves to the cinema, but rather – to hold an open exhibition and invite everyone in Vilnius to “Teodoras’s” studio.

Carnality and the secrets of the city, the uncompromising pursuit of freedom and the unrelenting feeling that you are being followed, passion, the dark side of man, the most mystical symbols of Vilnius, and the Kanuks who still live among us – these are just some of the themes of the Are You a Kanuk? exhibition.

The exhibition will feature paintings and sculptures by Teodoras Kazimieras Valaitis,
Valentinas Antanavičius, Eglė Kuckaitė, Mindaugas Skudutis, Bronius Gražys, Emilis Vėlyvis,
Rimas Olšauskas, Audrius Gražys, Monika Furmana, Laisvydė Šalčiūtė, Aleksandras Vozbinas,
Arvydas Šaltenis, Vincas Kisarauskas, Vytautas Vasiliūnas, Eglė Ganda Bogdanienė, Vilmantas
Marcinkevičius, Donatas Jankauskas-Duonis, Egmontas Bžeskas and Vladas Juodagalvis.
Some of these artists created pieces expressly for the Are You a Kanuk? exhibition that will be being shown for the first time.
